The Pirates found surprising starting pitching to carry them into first place
as late as July, but big uncertainties remain within their critical young
core. All of those players will get more chances, so GM Neal Huntington needs
to strike a balance between pushing the youngsters along while filling in
holes immediately. The taste of winning has whetted the appetite in
Pittsburgh, and talk of rebuilding isn’t going to be accepted. BIGGEST NEEDS:
The Pirates are in need of power, in general, and the extent of that need will
be determined largely by whether or not they can persuade 1B Derrek Lee to
stay. If he does, the rest of the lineup can be built largely on speed. If he
goes, first base moves to the top of the list, as there are no internal
options. The Pirates also can be expected to go on another search for a
shortstop, though those have produced borderline laughable results in recent

strong push to sign Lee, who made $7.25 million this season at age 36, but
