GPS – How To Keep Yours Working Longer

GPS units have soared in popularity over the past few years, and they can now be found in many cars. Some people say that they really could not live without one now, but even those people would admit that they wish they encountered less problems with their GPS. Common problems encountered with GPSs are normally down to the owner, and not any inherent fault in the unit, so the good news is that most can be avoided if you know how. The following is some practical information and advice on keeping your GPS in good working order.

Processor : Your GPS processor works whenever the GPS is switched on, even if you are not actually using it. Most people think that leaving it on is no big deal, after all, the battery when will not run out as it is plugged in, but whenever it is on it is constantly in contact with the various GPS satellites. So, switch it off as soon as you arrive at your destination, or as soon as you no longer need directions. It only takes a second to turn it off when you have finished using it, and those seconds could end up adding years to the life of your GPS unit.

Battery : GPS unit batteries tend to be fairly delicate. Any kind of power surge will probably ruin it. You should therefore ensure that your GPS is not plugged in to the power outlet when your start your car. The reason being that a slight power surge is sent through all of a car’s power outlets when it is started up. Over time, these power surges will wear out your GPSs battery. At the very least, this means that you will have to buy a new battery sooner than you would otherwise have to.

Screen : Many people complain that the screen on their GPS no longer looks or works like it once did. The touch screen that used to work perfectly is said to be slow to respond and brightness of the screen said to have become subdued. Well, there is a simple and effective way to stop this happening to the screen on your GPS. A screen protector is all that is required. With a screen protector in place, there is no way that the dirt on your fingers can come into contact with either the screen itself or the sensitive touch receptors under it.
