Paxil Use May Result To Developmental Delays And Other Birth Defects

Growing is not only talking about getting big and tall. It also includes the achievement of milestones in other developmental domains. The four domains of development namely Intellectual, Language, Socio-emotional and Physical have milestones which needs to be achieved. Developmental milestones are created to serve as guide for the “normal” and not as something that would be a source of worry for the parents or caregivers. Every child has his/her own timeline and developmental milestones will not be same for everyone. However, some children are still considered to be delayed in their developmental milestones. This can be associated with a variety of factors which includes taking Paxil when pregnant. Paxil has also been reported to be one of the cause on why some infants experience antidepressant withdrawal.

Basis on Paxil Causing Developmental Delays

Delays in development could be very difficult to assess because as stated, each child is unique and the milestones are only there to serve as guide. Also, the connection between developmental delays the use of SSRI’s was not established by prior studies. However, an article published on the medical journal, Pediatrics which is written by Lars Henning Pedersen, Tine Brink Henriksen, and Jørn Olsen gave basis for delayed childhood developments linking to SSRI use especially during the 2^nd or 3^rd trimester of pregnancy. The study was conducted on 6-month and 19-month developmental milestones from the Danish National Birth Cohort (DNBC). The study has 81, 042 women who don’t have depression, 489 women with symptoms of depression but are not undergoing drug therapy, and 415 women who suffer from depression and are taking antidepressants. Among the 415 women taking antidepressants, 336 are taking SSRIs and 76 of those are taking Paxil.

Babies born to women who took Paxil had remarkable delays in development such as with speech, walking and sitting upright and other cognitive developments. The prevalence in boys are also more than that of girls. These developmental delays cannot be identified whether they are permanent or reversible. The delays may affect the child later in life but that is still unclear. Paxil use during pregnancy has been argued especially with regard to Paxil side effects which include birth defects.
