16mm Projectors and Hidden Film Gems
Do you have memories of years gone by, recorded to 16mm film, that you want to watch again? Back in the day 16mm projectors were great and all around use being used to capture everyday life and special occasions to make home movies. As technology advanced over the years, these types of projectors became less popular. In this day and age, it is such a quaint and nostalgic experience to be able to watch films on an old 16mm projector.
It was in the days of the Great Depression when 16mm projectors made their debut in the world, and they were the main attraction for many moviegoers. Eastman Kodak and Bell & Howell built these projectors to give a boost to entertainment and industry while setting up early companies of film. In the beginning, silent pictures only needed a projector that could function at approximately 16 to 18 feet per second. However, “talkies” began to take over the film world and projectors needed to operate at 24 feet per second.
16mm projectors in the 1970s used tubular lamps, sometimes called “Mazda lamps”, most often. Standing six inches tall, these big lamps possessed approximately 750 watts. Succeeding these lamps were new, tungsten-halogen lamps which were much more efficient and even became the standard after some time. The Tungsten lamps could effortlessly hold a 250 watt lamp while remaining brighter than any of the previous 750 watt lamps. In regards to the size of reels, 16mm projectors could have up to 2,000 feet while the grander 6,000 foot reels were kept exclusively for specialists.
It has become easier to find a good second-hand 16mm projector in the past ten years, thanks to internet sites like eBay. Before the Internet was initiated in the 1990′s, finding 16mm projectors to play your old reels was a hard thing to accomplish. Flea markets, second hand stores, yard sales, and pawn shops were all places for used projectors to be found, but sometimes they needed repairs which are even harder to find. All of this hard work paid off however when you are finally watching those old home movies that was only experienced by die-hard collectors a few years ago. EBay now allows for people to buy and sell their 16mm projectors with ease and anyone can be a collector. That meant selling the 16mm projectors that had been sitting in the attic so long, and were in perfect condition. Many people want a projector of their own so that they can watch their old film reels once more, while other individuals simply seek this hot collector’s item to add into their own inventories.
For those of you out there who are seeking for a way to watch those old family film reels again, attaining your own used projector is just a click away. Go to eBay, or another website that sells used items, and you’ll be able to find used 16mm projectors at a great deal, allowing you to travel back in time by enjoying your old home movies!
