How to replace the flint on a 40s elgin american company Cigarette case/lighter?
I have a vintage elgin american company cigarette case lighter combo and I was wondering where you got replacement flints for them. It was given to me without a flint and i would like to get it working again and i tried using a bic flint but the bic flint was too wide to fit in the elgin lighter so i was wondering what kind of flint i would need to buy to replace the flint in my cigarette case.
the screws can also be located inside of the casing. Grab the diffuser with your fingers or small pliers and pull the metal jacket off. It should come off fairly easy. Now invert the lighter and you will see aether two screws or one screw and a hole in the batting that hold the fluid. Unscrew the screw slowly because it is spring loaded to keep the pressure on the flint for good striking abilities. Once the screw clears the threads it may just sraaaangg lol. Remove the screw it will have a spring attached to it. Then open your other hand and lightly tap the lighter so to dislodge the old flint. Replace with a new one replace the screw spring assembly and check the batting before adding fluid to assure its age hasn’t degraded it any. If all is well fill with fluid inverted and replace sheathing still inverted. Turn it over and try to light it. If it does not catch by the third attempt then use another lighter to catch on fire. The flame will draw the fluid up through the wick and prime it for future lights. Let it burn for a couple minutes and close. Let it cool down because if memory serves me the older ones got Pretty warm. Hope this helps.
