The FIRST video player was Betamax!

(you have to be old to know the answer to this one…LOL)

A home videocassette tape recording format developed by Sony (sony Beta Player), and released on May 10, 1975.
They were actually smaller and from what I have been told over the years, they were actually a BETTER videocassette than VHS was.

Betas stuck around for quite a while but eventually VHS beat the market and ran Beta out of business.
(it was very much like the difference between Apple computers and Microsoft)

At one time we had BOTH Beta and VHS and they looked a lot alike, it was how they worked and the flim that made the difference. But watching them was just the same.

The video home recording system VHS, that we used with VCR’s for so long wasn’t introduced by JVC in 1976, a year later.

That model Philips, the kings of home entertainment, had cost over $2000 and never made it into the home market simply because there was no reason to have one, it was still used for commercial purposes.
AND… SONY once again demonstrated a videocassette in October 1969, beating out Philips, but again, like the Philips that came after it, had no market.

So, whichever info the questioner needs, the FIRST “video player” was Mcdisney’s Ampex VRX-1000 and the FIRST “video player” whose purpose was for PLAYING videos at HOME that we use today that actually got purchased as a video player for the home was the Betamax.
