Understanding Scuba Equipment And How It Works
Are you a newcomer to scuba diving? If so, I’m sure that the first time you went shopping for diving gear it was easy to be lured by all the great colors and avant-garde designs. You can really make a fashion statement with your wetsuit, alone, if you wanted to do that. But most divers are not overly concerned with that aspect; they wisely want to find high quality equipment that is reliable. A word to the wise – be very careful if you are considering purchasing used diving equipment. You would really be taking a risk with some types of used gear because it’s not always possible to check out the interior systems to see if they are solid. Diving fins are fascinating to study because a great deal of thought and design have been applied to fins. Priced around $1000, specific application fins are very valuable for specific purposes whereas every day commercial fins run about 100 bucks. Another thing you should notice right away, even at a glance, is that there are many bizarre and unusual designs with diving fins. If you are planning to dive in caves, you can get fins that are long and have a long slit in them. Large fins such as these are designed in this way provide maximum speed and acceleration for all of those that use them. Power fins are well known by serious divers that need acceleration and sustained speed while diving.
Another thing you need to be aware of are scuba diving tanks which are air cylinders for the diver. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes, and are typically constructed out of aluminum or steel. As you may have guessed, different tanks are used for different types of dives. The air that you breathe underwater from the cylinders is definitely more efficient when different materials are used as the tanks are constructed. Depending upon whether or not the cylinders are used in the US or Europe, the cylinder designations can be very diverse. For example, in the US they are referenced by how much gas is contained when expanded to a pressure of 1 Atm, or atmosphere. While in Europe the reference is given in terms of internal volume.
You are probably familiar with what’s commonly referred to as a BCD – buoyancy control device. The state of design at this stage is to include the BCD integral to the harness for what ever configuration you are using. There also needs to be a feed that connects the gas from the cylinder and regulator to the BC and an inflation valve that transports the gas into the BCs bladders. All in all, the BC is made up of bladders, among other things, that can be inflated manually or automatically. When a diver needs to be able to stay at a certain depth easily, he or she uses their BC to maintain this neutral buoyancy by adjusting the volume in the bladders.
In conclusion, scuba equipment like the dive computer is obviously a technological breakthrough of great intrinsic value. Diving equipment has definitely come a long way, and it of course owes its advancements to modern technology. Of all of the pieces of diving equipment and gear that you get, always pay top dollar for this particular item because you really do want it to work properly.
