What period is a HAWTHORNE POCKET WATCH SWISS made?
Hi, I am wondering whether anyone knows when a HAWTHORNE brand POCKET WATCH (seller said SWISS made, seller also is not knowledgeable) is made?
I am buying an item on ebay and want to know the year it is made. The watch is like this:
Open face, back cover is engraved with some leaves pattern. On the watch said Swiss made? Then there is a necklace to it. Not sure whether its gold plated/filled/whatever.
Roman numerals. Mechanical. Works.
When is this from yea? I like older watches, so I wouldn’t buy it unless its old enough.
And anyone knows whether this is LADIES/GENTS pocket watch? How do you determine whether a pocket watch is for male or female anyway?

I have heard of the brand but know nothing about it – it isn’t listed in any of the watch pricing guides and I suspect it isn’t of any great value. It isn’t one of the 50 or so leading brands, let’s put it that way and form even the lesser of those brands you are unlikely to find many watches worth more than a few dollars. A lot depends on the movement in the piece, but it doesn’t sound like it has any unusual complications.
Pocket watches fell out of favour between WW1 and WW2 so your piece could predate either war. Although European watches were initially better than American ones, American ones tended to be better until the early 20th Century when Swiss watches started to dominate the market. I suspect your watch will not be more than 80 or 90 years old, probably American using an imported standard Swiss movement.
Prior to about 1910 watches used real jewels rather than artificial ones.There are also various other innovations that can help date the watch, but you will need to open it up and let an experienced watchmaker look at it to give it a rough age. At a guess I would say 1920s or 1930s.
The size of watch is generally a good guide to which sex it was intended for. Also some of the design will give some clues, but generally pocket watches were designed for men.
