Metal Clock
Does anybody know how to build an easy, simple wood or metal clock???
It’s for a school project so help please and give me good honest answers..
There’s no easy to build clock, if you’re talking a mechanical clock. Wood will certainly be easier to work with, but it’s still tricky. One relatively easy type to build will be a weight driven verge escapement design, similar to those built in the 16th century.

These typically had one hand, marking hours, which will reduce the number of gears needed by two. They used a verge and foliot escapement, which is probably somewhat more complicated to get working than a verge and pendulum, which was a later development.

The escapement, incidentally, is what stops and starts the gear train to give a regular beat to a clock and is probably the trickiest part of building one. Basically, you need something which can be impelled by the movement of a gear which then stops the gear work, and then releases it a set amount of time later. This is what makes the ticking sound in a mechanical clock. This is generally done with some sort of a mechanical oscillator, and a system that locks and unlocks the gear work which communicates the force to the mechanical oscillator.

Like I said, the simplest thing to build would be a verge and pendulum similar to some of the early designs built by Huygens, but even that is going to be a pretty difficult task, even if made from wood, and the details on how exactly to build one are far more involved than I could document here.
If done well, however, you will have a pretty cool piece of equipment on your hands, and one that should run nicely for many years. Good luck!
