HEY GUYS …HERE’S HOW TO WEAR THE POWER SUIT TO AN INTERVIEW

You’re halfway to that fantastic new job…you’ve got the interview.  But is your wardrobe going to let you down?

Rule # 1 is that you should rather dress too conservatively than too casually – you can over-dress, but you can’t under-dress.  Suits are probably your best bet.

The second important rule is to make sure that whatever you are wearing has been properly cleaned or dry-cleaned and is pressed properly.   Your shirts should be crease-free, your tie should hang straight and there should be no trace of your breakfast on your suit trousers!   A well-groomed applicant will definitely have the edge over someone who looks disorganised and grubby because they’ll give the impression that they take care over what they do…and that’s good news for a potential employer. 

Another rule of thumb is that the colouring of your menswear should be dark.  A dark suit is a more formal look, and more professional than a light coloured one.

If your formalwear trousers have belt loops – then the golden rule is to wear a belt!.  And you can’t haul out your cowboy special with a knuckleduster for a buckle – a smart subtle look is what will get you over the line.  And the same rule applies to your tie…….  Leave the novelty ties for fancy dress parties and stick to something classic and elegant.   Your tie should be tied with neat knot (no strap-ons!) and should reach the top of your belt buckle.

Dirty, scratched and scuffed shoes will catch the interviewer’s attention – for the wrong reasons.  Dirty shoes means you don’t care – and that’s not a good look for prospective employer.  Anything that gives you the edge over your ‘competitors’ in the interview should be grabbed with both hands – and your attire is one aspect that you have full control of, so use it wisely.
