YouTube’s Greyson97 Is An Overnight Sensation
Greyson97′s Cover of “Paparazzi” is the latest and greatest “viral sensation” and for an excellent reason. This kid rocks! The way his music career is taking off (he’s already booked on Ellen) off of a YouTube video reminds me of how Justin Bieber got his career kick started. The difference is Greyson 97′s “Paparazzi” YouTube video is actually far more impressive than anything I’ve seen from Bieber.
While I would rather listen to The Beatles In Stereo Remastered CD Box Set I do have to give some love to this kid (who I only know by his name on YouTube because he’s quite a vocalist, particularly when you consider how young he is.
Other than the clear vocal skill that he has, I think what is most impressive is the passion that he seems to have in his voice. I believe that is what sets him apart from other talented young singers out there. And it is the kind of passion I hear in these vocals that is usually missing from most pop music in the 21st century.
But I must say (somewhat jokingly) that the quality of the recording on his original songs isn’t particularly high. Perhaps I am being too hard on “Greyson97″ since he is a 6th grader but he could definitely benefit from reading up on the latest information on the topic of home studio recording.
Although, I’m sure that won’t be necessary because some famous music producer will probably jump at the chance to create a hit CD with this kid. Bieber has already shown that “internet viral sensations” can have a hit CD and I’m pretty sure Greyson97 could have a big hit album too.
In spite of my praise for this young man I do want to end with a bit of a “teachable moment.” Great singers come and go all the time. It is great compositions that matter most. I think what makes the majority of today’s popular music so easily disposable isn’t that there are not excellent performers (there are) but that there are not enough excellent songwriters.
