How Do I Wind a Manual Watch?
I have a Jaeger-Lecoultre Reverso, to be exact. I just inherited it and I’m trying to get it up and running. I can’t seem to unscrew the crown. Are the hands supposed to move when I wind?
I do not know that particular watch. However most manual watches : the little dohickey at the side, you gently pull it out a click. That will enable you to turn the hands. It does not wind the watch. For the winding, the dohickey has to be in the closed position, i.e. not pulled out, and you turn it several times (not too much or you could break the spring inside). The hands should not turn when you wind. It’s possible it is broken already but a watchsmith can fix that if it’s a good watch. Sometimes old watches and clocks have a lot of dust inside which again the watchsmith or jeweller can fix.
