Water Tanks That Have Insulation For The Winter

Cool water in summer and warm water in winter is most effective to dairy animals. In fact, the use of individual drinking cups as part of the modern dairy barn equipment has demonstrated that animals will drink more water when it is not coming from a tank that has frozen, than they will where the ice has to be chopped off. It is essential for dairy animals to drink water continuously especially during winter because a cow needs to drink four to five pounds of water to be able to produce one pound of milk. Setting up insulation in water tanks will stop them from freezing over in winter. Bacterial growth in the water tank can be prevented by covering the tank making it impossible for sunlight to directly come in contact with water.
During winter, we tested two Iowa farm tanks that do not freeze despite the temperature in two sites in the state. Hollow tiles and cement composed one of the tanks while the other one is constructed out of concrete and enclosed within a small tank house. The owner of the concrete tank has never had issues with the development of sheets of ice on the tank during winter.
The insulation of the tank was enhanced with a double wall structure filled with sawdust. The walls of the other tank were built using ordinary building tiles and piling them five inches in thickness proved to be effective insulation. A lid constructed from hollow tiles and concrete serves as the only protection of the water tank and this particular lid has three openings for the animals to drink from. The fingers are able to break up the thin sheets of ice that develop around the openings. This method in building the walls of the water tanks will stop the process of condensation.
One of the primary advantages in building an underground tank is the minimal cost of the natural insulation that comes with it. On the ground, the possibility of the tank’s content to freeze increases.
The outside wall does not have to subject to the same process. The broad top interior of the tank is responsible for the propulsion of sheets of ice upward and the dispersal of the pressure from the walls of the tank. We were informed by the farmer from northern Iowa who owns concrete tanks.
The best cover for tanks according to the farmer who owns the hollow tile tank, is a cover made of reinforced hollow building tiles and concrete. It is permanent and thicker and less likely to develop frosty air in winter or hot air in summer. The tile’s dead air space offers a natural form of insulation against both heat and cold.
