From The UK To Frankfurt
Not just of the busiest airports in all of Europe, Frankfurt International Airport is also the main hub for one of the world’s premier airlines, Lufthansa. UK travelers will never have a problem finding a flight between Frankfurt and London and other major cities in the UK. No other airport in continental Europe handles more passengers than Frankfurt International Airport, and once passengers arrive in Frankfurt, they will find two underground railway systems, an above-ground tram, and abundant taxis, making getting around Frankfurt very easy.
Not just home to a booming metropolitan area, Frankfurt is Germany’s financial center. It is the home of the Bundesbank, the European Central Bank, and the largest stock exchange in Europe, justifying the city’s reputation as a financial powerhouse. Trade travel and transportation also play important roles in Frankfurt’s economy. Frankfurt is a center for media, with thousands employed in advertising and public relations. Frankfurt has the highest concentration of lawyers in Germany, with one attorney for every 99 residents of the city.
Some of Europe’s tallest buildings can be found in Frankfurt. Like most of Germany, Frankfurt was heavily bombed during the Second World War, the damage rebuilt in a simple style common during the 1950′s. Frankfurt was also headquarters for the US Army occupation force after the war.
Visitors to Frankfurt will want to travel to the Main River to see the Museumsufer, a conglomerate of 13 major museums devoted to Jewish history, natural history, applied arts, and German architecture. Frankfurt also hosts a thriving art and cultural scene.
What are some other famous landmarks in Frankfurt? Look for the Zeil, the city’s main shopping area, St. Katherine’s Church, the Frankfurt Opera House, the Old Opera House, Roemer City Hall, St. Paul’s Church, and St. Bartholomeus’ Cathedral.
Frankfurt is also known around the world for its literary scene. The most celebrated writer in the German language, Wolfgang Goethe, once called Frankfurt home, and the city’s Frankfurt school was made famous by philosopher Theodor Adorno and others. Each year in October it hosts the Frankfurt Book Fair, a legendary trade event for book publishers from almost every country. The Book Fair celebrates its sixtieth anniversary in 2009.
A major festival in the city is the Museums Riverbank Festival, which attracts more than three million visitors over a three day period. It takes place at the end of August on both sides of the Main Riverbank in the city centre. More than 20 museums are located there, and the museums keep special late hours during the festival. There are also special attractions like music, dance shows, several booths for crafts, jewelry, clothes and food from all around the world. It ends with a spectacular firework display.
Frankfurt’s oldest folk festival is the Festival of Stoneware which takes place twice a year around Easter and the end of September in the eastern part of the city.
