U.K. Spies on Mobile Phones, Stays Mum on Usage (Mobiledia)
Britain’s largest police force is employing covert surveillance technology to
remotely intercept mobile communications and data, sparking debate over the
balance between security and privacy.
The nation’s Metropolitan Police bought a system that creates a mobile phone
network to transmit signals, which also allows authorities to shut off phones
remotely, intercept communications, and gather data. The system’s signal can
cover an area up to 10 square kilometers, providing real-time tracking of
users within that area.
The system was created by Leeds-based company Datong, which counts the U.S.
Secret Service and Middle Eastern governments as clients.
The system may subject large numbers of innocent people to covert intelligence
gathering and is raising alarm from civil liberty advocates, especially in
light of law enforcement’s refusal to confirm whether the system is used in
situations such as large protests or demonstrations.
Nick Pickles, director of privacy and civil liberties campaign group Big
Brother Watch, warned the technology could give police the ability to conduct
indiscriminate monitoring.
“It raises a number of serious civil liberties concerns and clarification is
urgently needed on when and where this technology has been deployed, and what
data has been gathered,” he said.
