Used Cars And The Terms You May Hear

There is certain terminology which seems to be used in the world of used cars. If you don’t know what it is meant by these words it can all get quite confusing. When it comes to used cars, the following words and phrases are some of the ones commonly used.

 

- There have been scams where some people have meddled with the odometer of a used car in order to make it appear as though there are less miles on the clock than there really is and this is referred to as ‘clocking’. If it looks like the odometer has been tampered with or changed then you would be wise to steer clear.

 

- When you hear of an ‘ex-fleet’ car, it means that the car was once a company car and owned by a business rather than one particular individual. Most businesses will replace their fleet every couple of years so you may pick up a great deal on one of these cars. It is also usual that these ex-fleet cars are better taken care of than your average second hand vehicle although they do clock up a lot of miles.

 

- Having a ‘full service history’ means that all the required services were carried out when they should have been done. This usually means that the car is going to be in the best condition.

 

- When you hear the word VIN, it is referring to the vehicle identification number of the car. This number is a great way to check out whether or not a car has been stolen. Stolen cars will usually have their VIN number tampered with so if you notice this, just walk away.

 

- A ‘coupe’ is a type of car that only comes with two doors and in most cases there will only be two seats in the car as well.

 

- You might have heard of ‘Craigslist’ and this is a website where a lot of used cars are bought and sold. It originated in the US but is now quite popular in the UK as well.
