How To Shop Wooton Desks

While William Wooton actually patented a pair of desk types, the one that quite a few American home furniture lovers will identify is the design designated “Wooton’s Patent Cabinet Office Secretary”. It was in most cases a 5 or 6 foot high piece which, when shut, appeared to be a particularly elaborate wardrobe. Once opened, though, the intention of this desk was extremely visible. Two paneled doors could rotate open on heavy duty hinges to show drawers and shelves of various measurements on the left door, and an array of pigeon holes on the right door. The center area of Wooton’s desk had a drop down writing leaf and an additional collection of shelves and pigeon holes. Overall, a Wooton desk had 110 compartments primarily planned for managing forms of all measurements.
The outer layer of a Wooton desk was typically built of black walnut wood coupled with gold leaf accents as much as possible. The doors each had a substantial brass handle and a brass plaque, one with Wooton’s name on it and the other with the desk patent date. The interiors were made of other woods, such as pine which were of a lighter shade and offered a an attractive contrast.
When looking for black living room furniture, if you are lucky enough to encounter one of Wooten’s masterpieces, make sure to do your homework. The prices that these kind of desks might bring will vary greatly, from $250,000 to a few thousand, depending on where you obtain it, what state of preservation it is in, and who once owned it. One of the interesting aspects of buying a Wooton desk is that quite a few were just as valuable for their well-known owners as for the value of the desk itself.
