All About Old-Time Radio Shows Legend Fred Allen
The Fred Allen Show was hosted by the man himself, and aired for 17 years, from 1932 to 1949. He was a well-known and beloved comedian who entertained listeners every Sunday as they eagerly tuned in.
The target of the humor was the latest news, and so Allen’s show was very current and one of the more successful Old Time Radio Shows. He was an avid reader of nine different newspapers and used clippings to help build a script. Often he used lesser-known news items to create a comic centerpiece for his show.
Born John Florence Sullivan on May 31, 1893 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Fred was raised by his aunt after his mother died when he was age three. From a young age he learned to play the piano and soon joined the Boston Public Library. In addition, he began learning to juggle. Combining these three interests of his, he was able to learn a lot about comedy and improve himself further.
He started his comical career when he competed in multiple contests. Performing in vaudeville influenced productions allowed him to travel the world. By 1922 Fred left the vaudeville scene to go for Broadway’s “The Passing Show”. It was while working on this show he met his wife, Portland Hoffa.
By 1932 his old-time radio career truly started, when he hosted The Linit Bath Review on CBS. In 1933 his show became the Salad Bowl Review sponsored by Hellman’s Mayonnaise. Finally, in 1934 he hosted the Sal Hepatica Revue, which later became the Hour of Smiles. After a few months, the show was re-named as Town Hall Tonight, and soon become The Fred Allen Show.
By the end of June 1949, The Fred Allen Show had come to an end. Over the years his wife Portland appeared as his sidekick adding to the comedy. Having had a long-running feud with real friend Jack Benny, Allen gained greater popularity.
This apparent ‘feud’ was started by Benny and Allen together. In actuality, the whole thing just happened by chance, and as listeners enjoyed the funny elements to it all, the writers and the comedians were told to meet in order to maximize on the popularity opportunity. The feud grew in its legendary status while the entertainers stayed professional about it all. It’s In the Bag and Love Thy Neighbor were two films that they both in fact starred in.
When the original Old Time Radio Shows came to a conclusion, he featured in multiple appearances in The Big Show. He even went to writing to express himself. Treadmill to Oblivion and Much Ado About Me were his two autobiographies.
While on a late night walk, Fred Allen suffered from a fatal heart attack at the age of 61. In 1988, he was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame. While he has been gone for a long time, he is still remembered very much for his classic old time radio recordings which presented plenty of humor and comedy.

The Reluctant Film Art of Woody Allen $24.95 For three decades, no American filmmaker has been as prolific — or as paradoxical — as Woody Allen. From Play It Again, Sam (1972) through Celebrity (1998) and Sweet and Lowdown (1999), Allen has produced an average of one film a year, yet in many of these films Allen reveals a progressively skeptical attitude toward both the value of art and the cultural contributions of artists. In examining Allen’s filmmaking career, The Reluctant Film Art of Woody Allen demonstrates that his movies often question whether the projected illusions of magicians/artists benefit audience or artists. Other Allen films dramatize the opposed conviction that the consoling, life-redeeming illusions of art are the best solution humanity has devised to the existential dilemma of being a death-foreseeing animal. Peter Bailey demonstrates how Allen’s films repeatedly revisit and reconfigure this tension between image and reality, art and life, fabrication and factuality, with each film reaching provisional resolutions that a subsequent movie will revise. Merging criticism and biography, Bailey identifies Allen’s ambivalent views of the artistic enterprise as a key to understanding his entire filmmaking career. Because of its focus upon filmmaker Sandy Bates’s conflict between entertaining audiences and confronting them with bleak human actualities, Stardust Memories is a central focus of the book. Bailey’s examination of Allen’s art/life dialectic also draws from the off screen drama of Allen’s very public separation from Mia Farrow, and the book accordingly construes such post-scandal films as Bullets Over Broadway and Mighty Aphrodite as Allen’s oblique cinematic responses to that tabloid tempest. By illuminating the thematic conflict at the heart of Allen’s work, Bailey seeks not only to clarify the aesthetic designs of individual Allen films but to demonstrate how his oeuvre enacts an ongoing debate the screenwriter/director has been conducting with himself between creating cinematic narratives affirming the saving powers of the human imagination and making films acknowledging the irresolvably dark truths of the human condition. |
